Hackers attacked the database of Romania-based bankrupt insurer Asigurare-Reasigurare Astra S.A. on Oct. 6, freezing access to important data and contracts, Romania-Insider.com reported citing Profit.ro. The hackers used encryption to restrict access to the insurer’s data, which includes millions of claims and insurance contracts as well as clients’ personal data. Dutch consultancy firm KPMG International said that access to the database is important as the insurer’s liquidation process is only halfway complete. The hackers have demanded a ransom of up to $25,000 in bitcoin for each affected server, KPMG added.
