The two-day event, to be hosted at the OneEleven office at 325 Front St. W, is aimed at developing technology-based solutions to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on cities.
“Insurance claims can peak as a result of natural disasters, which underlines the importance of reducing exposure on personal property, the city, and more importantly, on personal and family safety,” Ben Isotta-Riches, Aviva Canada’s chief information officer, said in a statement.

Data provided by the Insurance Bureau of Canada shows that the annual economic cost of natural disasters around the world has increased five-fold since the 1980s. In Canada, the most common perils are floods, wildfires, earthquakes, winter storms and severe winds.
Registration for the hackathon is open to developers, first responders, designers, emergency preparedness experts, lawyers and insurance professionals at bit.ly/DisasterTechHack.
